Pharmacy First: Sore Throat Support
Sore throats are extremely common and, in most cases, settle on their own within a few days. They’re often linked to short-term illnesses like colds or flu, and many people can feel better with simple steps at home. Our team is here to help you understand your symptoms and access the right care quickly.
Through the Pharmacy First Service for sore throat, people aged 5 years and over can speak directly with a pharmacist for assessment and advice.
When you visit us, you’ll have a confidential consultation in a private room, where the pharmacist will ask about your symptoms and how long you’ve been unwell. If needed, we can carry out a quick test, such as a throat swab, to help check whether the cause is likely viral or bacterial. Not everyone will need this, but it can guide the most appropriate support.
We can offer treatment at no cost to ease discomfort, reduce temperature, and help you feel more settled. You’ll also receive clear guidance on what you can do at home and what to look out for as you recover.
Most sore throats are linked to viruses and improve without additional care, but if your symptoms suggest a bacterial infection, the pharmacist will discuss the most suitable treatment. If things aren’t improving or you begin to feel worse, we may advise speaking with your GP for further assessment.
Our aim is to make it easier for you to get the help you need, when you need it — right here in your local community. Let us know if you or your child is struggling with a sore throat, and we’ll take it from there.
