Pharmacy First – Urinary Tract Infection
The Pharmacy First Service allows women aged 16–64 who are registered with a GP in Northern Ireland to use the pharmacy as their first point of contact for the management of urinary tract infections (UTIs), without needing to contact their GP first.
Symptoms may include a sudden need to pass urine, passing urine more often than usual, a burning sensation when passing urine or cloudy urine.
The pharmacist can provide advice, supply medication when appropriate or refer patients to their GP according to their needs.
Women seeking advice or treatment can contact the pharmacy in person or by telephone. The pharmacist will discuss your symptoms and medical history and may ask you to bring a urine sample to the pharmacy. If appropriate, the pharmacist can provide antibiotics to treat the infection.
The consultation takes place in person at the pharmacy.
